Antique Doll Quilt

I love old doll quilts so thought I would post a little bit about one that I own. It is a simple little one patch that measures approximately 17 inches x 14 inches and is hand tyed instead of quilted. Judging by the fabric, I'm guessing it was most likely made in the 1870s or 1880s but I don't know the actual history of the quilt so can't say for certain.

The back of the quilt consists of four blocks made from some beautiful antique fabrics. The brown madder print is especially wonderful!

There are some amazing madder prints in this quilt with plenty of shirtings and other types of prints mixed in. Only a few fabrics have been used more than once so it truly is a great little study of 19th century calicoes. Someone once upon a time had a lot of scraps to use up!

That is a beautiful little quilt and it certainly does look very antique judging by the fabric patterns. There is just something about older fabrics that is so poignant, just touching it and feeling the creative energy of the person who stitched it must be an experience. Wonderful quilt Sandy!
